If your bank account has been compromised or you've fallen victim to fraud, here are the immediate steps you should take:

  1. Contact us immediately. Inform us of the suspected fraud and provide as much detail as possible. We can help you freeze your account to prevent further unauthorized transactions.

  2. Review your recent transactions. Look for any unfamiliar or suspicious charges. This can help you identify the extent of the fraud when notifying us.

  3. Report the fraud to the authorities. File a police report and contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report identity theft.

  4. Monitor your credit report. Fraudsters may attempt to open new accounts in your name. Regularly check your credit report for any unauthorized activity.

If your account with Hingham Savings has been closed and a new one opened, be sure to:

  • Update Account Details with Vendors:

    • To ensure uninterrupted service for direct deposits and automatic withdrawals, please notify all vendors of your new account information.

      • Please provide your new account number and routing number to each vendor.

      • For your convenience, we will manually process payments from your new account based on your prior instructions for a period of 6 months.

    • By updating your vendors, you will help guarantee a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions to your financial transactions.

To prevent future fraud, consider these proactive steps:

  • Use strong, unique passwords. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or pet names.

  • Be cautious of phishing scams. Do not click on links or open attachments from unknown or suspicious sources.

  • Limit sharing personal information online. Be mindful of what information you share on social media and avoid providing sensitive details like your Social Security number or account passwords.

  • Monitor your account activity. Regularly review your bank statements and credit card transactions for any unauthorized charges. Set up account alerts to be notified when activity occurs.

By following these steps, you can help protect yourself from bank fraud and minimize the potential damage if you become a victim.
